To quickly solve basic needs for emergency immigrants (immigrants seeking asylum), refugee centers will be key to provide them with the essential elements to start a new live a short-term basis. Refugee centers will include residential units, intimate rooms and private spaces, common spaces to cook and eat, common baths, schools for children and language classes for immigrants, administration buildings, basic health care centres, small shops, and communal gardens for fruit and vegetable production.

While the refugee centers might be seen as a contradictory measure, they should be considered an emergency and temporary situation; while new housing is provided and immigrants can wait for relocation across the country. At the same time, there are locals that might benefit from the opportunities that refugee centers can provide: new jobs (construction, health care, education, governance…); and we understand that refugee centers should also accept locals that might require emergency assistance; such as homeless people and people in risk of homelessness; as they can benefit from workshops and social activities to improve their skills and integration within society.

HOUSING:

  • Common spaces for cooking and eating

  • Shared facilities: baths, gathering nodes, ...

INTEGRATION STRATEGY: HOW TO EVERYONE?

  • Sports competition for children

  • Sharing cultural celebrations between populations

  • Food events: cooking together or eat together in the streets

  • Playground for children

  • Music events: festivals, concerts, ethnical music...

  • Councils of immigrants and local people: How can we help one another?

IN THE CITY

By spreading the refugee centers in all the urban scenario, and being present in the middle of local residential areas, we can activate the social inclusion of the migrants.

How to achieve it? Instead of creating new developments exclusively for mass immigrants, we aim to create units of 100 new inhabitants per every 2500 local inhabitants; aiming to not increase the current areas by more than a 5% of the existing population.

The refugee centers will be used as temporary emergency shelters, to be used while the further developments are built.

At the same time, we would like the future developments to include existing local inhabitants that also need accommodation, and that can influence positively both in the public perception of the developments, and overall integration.

JOB STRATEGY:

  • Urban farms for immigrants self-production and selling

  • Shops: jobs for locals and migrants + selling of migrants production (food, handmade objects, vegetables)

OTHERS BUILDINGS:

  • Schools: learn language for migrants + mixing local children, multicultural classes and works

  • Administration

  • Health care center

  • Shops and gardens
