Analysis and strategy
SWOT Analysis
As we’ve described in out SWOT analysis, our area has a lot of clearly visible strengths. The first and major one is the existing architectural heritage, remains of Schihau’s Shipyard and Imperial Shipyard, which had taken place there. Another big strength is communication - not only easy connection with existing roads, but also public transport - trams, train line. We can reach easily two SKM stations - SKM Stocznia and SKM Politechnika. What is also important for tourists, but also citizens is the proximity of the city center. Clearly, it would take a longer walk from the most well-known monuments, but we could be led by newly developed boulevard near Wiosny Ludów and one of the most recognized contemporary sculptures in GdaÅ„sk’s tissue - Museum of Second World War. From it in a blink of an eye we will see another characteristic building - European Solidarity Centre. But, apart from that without any doubt we agreed that the biggest advantage is the closeness to water which may be an opportunity for creating people-friendly public spaces.
Strengths
Apart from strengths, we also have found some weaknesses - first one is the lack of needed infrastructure. If we would like to make the connection with existing and living urban tissue, the key point would be to provide necessary communication. Some of the still existing shipyard workshops and warehouses are producing a lot of noise which can be harmful for all who would like to purchase here some properties. Because for a long time those shipyard areas were not open for the passerby, the area in which are we proposing changes may still be perceived as a closed ares, not welcoming for anyone. Also, other problem is the lack of greenery and the danger of poisoned ground.
Weakness
But we listed some opportunities which may go along with our vision for the place. First would be creating open and people-friendly waterfront areas, which will encourage people to spend here time for recreation and leisure. Waterfront post-shipyard areas may be a interesting alternative for walks on DÅ‚uga Street or in Oliwa’s Park. The whole urban regeneration could be a chance for GdaÅ„sk as a complex process. Another opportunity may be the re-usage of already existing historical buildings - some of them are in poor condition, but after renovation they can serve well for new functions and still be a genius loci for the place. Other opportunity that we see is that in this area there are already existing cultural places - clubs, bars which are rapidly gaining popularity.
Opportunities
The major threat that we see in this area is the flood risk which is very high. Flood risk maps cover almost whole our site.
