ABOUT

THE STUDIO

The Studio, organised by the Department of Urban Design and Regional, Faculty of Architecture at the Gdansk University of Technology, in the winter semester 2018/2019, in the frame of architectural master studies, was oriented on solving spatial planning issues in contemporary cities.

This course was dedicated to master students both from Poland and abroad and brought together an international enthusiastic group greatly involved in the projects’ work. Thanks to their passion, interests and the constant need to be challenged and learn a new thing we achieved the results shared at this website. During the whole semester the team was working with passion and enjoyed both designing and discussing assigned exercises focused on introducing bases for urban planning.

With such an aim, the Studio was divided into three parts within which the students:

  • were encouraged to develop skills which are useful while interpreting planning documents (exercise 1),

Students were asked to play a role of experts advising developers aiming to achieve different results by investing in multi-family housing in Wrzeszcz-Gdansk. Depends on criteria assigned by investor, the team interpreted local development plan and on the bases of expected results prepared a implementation strategy based on different planning tools and the timeline ending with a submission for building permit.

  • discovered key tools for shaping investment processes and framing multidisciplinary cooperation aiming to build coherent neighbourhoods (exercise 2),

Based on designing guidelines the teams prepared implementation strategy for developing Model Social District in Warsaw. Their work includes presentation of current state, urban development concept, phasing of the process, timeline and funding schemes. Within the work, students were encouraged to base their concepts on their advanced knowledge of planning tools and were familiarized with cooperation models and tools for building public-private-partnerships.

  • were familiarized with the language of strategic planning (exercise 3).

Four teams were asked to design elements of the strategy for a chosen city which due to the global change:

(1) is preparing for climate change adaptation due to drastic increase of temperature,

(2) is implementing alternative transport systems in order to eliminate individual transport when at the same time introducing smart and coherent solutions answering needs of all users

(3) is facing a great social change which results with decreasing number of private properties while at the same time due living becomes a service

(4) is considering the situation when the residents are replaced at work by artificial intelligence and the need to adapt the labour market will occur.

Even though the time for each task was very limited the results are worth studying. Therefore, we invite you to follow our website.
